A step-by-step plan for reading the Ukrainian edition of The Tuttle Twins and the Magic Pencil with your kids, with discussion questions and a simple family read-aloud routine.

Quick answer

Read the Ukrainian edition of Близнюки Таттл і Чарівний Олівець in short, predictable sessions: preview the pencil-making idea, read one chapter aloud with pauses, then ask two or three concrete questions. Keep the tone curious rather than quiz-like.

Why this book works for a family read-aloud

The story follows Ethan and Emily Tuttle as they discover that even a simple pencil depends on many people and steps—a concrete way to introduce the idea of a free market without a lecture. Because the book is a print edition in Ukrainian, you can pause, point at the page, and let children flip back to earlier scenes.

That physical format is also the main trade-off: you need to plan ahead if you want to finish a chapter in one sitting, and you cannot search the text the way you would a digital file. For families who read together at a set time, those limits are usually minor.

What to prepare before the first session

Choose a regular slot of 15–20 minutes, keep the book in the same place, and decide in advance how many pages you will cover. If your child reads Ukrainian slowly, read aloud yourself and let them follow along; the goal is understanding the pencil-factory idea, not finishing quickly.

A common mistake is treating the book as a test of vocabulary. The story’s value comes from the conversation about how things are made and why no single person knows how to make a pencil alone.

Your step-by-step reading plan

Set a predictable reading slot: Pick a recurring 15–20 minute window, such as after dinner or before bed, and keep the book in the same spot. Common mistake: squeezing reading into random gaps, which makes it easy to skip. Put the slot on a visible family calendar for the first two weeks.
Preview the pencil idea in one sentence: Before reading, ask: “Do you know who makes a pencil?” Let your child guess, then say the story will show why the answer is more surprising than it seems. Common mistake: explaining the whole lesson before the story. Write down your child’s guess so you can revisit it after the chapter.
Read one chapter aloud with two planned pauses: Stop once when the twins first see the factory and once near the end. At each pause, ask one open question, such as “What surprised you here?” Common mistake: stopping too often and breaking the flow. Keep the pauses to two per session unless your child asks for more.
Ask two or three concrete discussion questions: Use questions tied to the page: “Which job would you want on the pencil line?” “Why can’t one person do every step?” “What did the twins think at the start?” Common mistake: turning the questions into a comprehension quiz. Choose questions your child can answer from the story, not from memory of definitions.
Connect the story to one object at home: After reading, ask your child to pick a household object—a backpack, a shirt, a chair—and name two people who might have made it. Common mistake: jumping straight to abstract economics instead of using a concrete object. Keep the object nearby for the next session as a reminder.
Close with a one-line recap: Ask your child to finish the sentence: “The pencil is a miracle because…” Then write their answer on a sticky note inside the book cover. Common mistake: ending without a moment of reflection. Review the sticky notes together after the final chapter.
